Prayer

An Introduction to Lectio Divina

Lectio Divina — “The Divine Reading” or “Divine Listening” by hearing the word spoken — is a discipline that intuitively and affectively dwells on a Biblical text as a means of seeking communion with Christ, so as to grow in faith, hope and charity. It is based on “Bible teaching.” For example, in John 15:26, we read: The Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name will instruct you in everything, and remind you of all that I told you.

Carmelite Prayer: A Simple Method

Our Lord taught Saint Teresa a simple method of prayer. It is often called mental prayer. “I never knew what it was to get satisfaction and comfort out of prayer,” confesses the Saint, “until the Lord taught me this method — I beg of you to test it.” ... This manner of praying brings with it a thousand blessings. “Before long,” says Teresa, “you will see how you gain. There will be a gradual gaining of mastery over oneself. The soul will be stronger for the fight.”

Litany of St. Thérèse

Litany to St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. This litany may be prayed at any time, but it is especially beneficial to pray it on St. Thérèse’s feast day (October 1) or as part of a novena leading up to her feast day (September 22-30).

Novena of the Holy Spirit

Edith Stein, St. Benedicta of the Cross, the saintly Carmelite, profound philosopher and brilliant writer, is an inspiration to all Christians whose heritage is the Cross. This novena to the Holy Spirit is a strong witness to her deep faith and dependence on God. It is the perfect prayer to say in preparation for the Feast of Pentecost.
