George Preca was a Maltese Roman Catholic priest who founded the Society of Christian Doctrine, a society of lay catechists. In Malta, he is known as “Dun Gorg” and is popularly referred to as the “Second Apostle of Malta,” after Paul of Tarsus. On July 21, 1918, St. George was received into the Carmelite Third Order and one year later, on July 26, 1919, he made his profession. In 1952 he was ‘affiliated’ to the Order as a recognition of his efforts to spread devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on June 3, 2007.
